    "もちろん増刷りが掛かりまくって100万部出てすら赤字（１冊あたりは50万部だけど）というのは、商品設計になにか決定的な問題点があったとしか思えない。まして１冊約2000円という高額書籍なのに。


    理由は高額ロイヤリティーだそうだ。

    米国では同書の標準小売価格は35ドル。まあ3000円といったところ。前後編に分かれておらず１冊だ。

    日本の場合前後編２冊合計で4000円。もちろん英語書籍と日本語書籍の市場規模は比較するべくもないので日本のほうが高額になるのは当然だし２冊に分かれてる分だけ造本費用が嵩むので、値付け自体はそうおかしくはない。

    が、それにしても100万部出てるのに赤字とは。これ本来１冊7000円とか値付けが必要じゃないの（笑）。前後編に分けたのも、もしかしたら高額なロイヤリティーを散らすために分冊がマストだったのかも。


    どんだけ米国にふっかけられてたんだよ。

    発売当時に出版物の市場規模とか多分ご存じない筋からずいぶん「講談社はぼったくり」非難を受けていたもんだが、割高の理由「講談社も読者も米国に貢ぎました」が判明して幕引きとはね。


    もちろん契約なんだから、嫌なら出版権を取らなくても良かったわけだ。講談社は納得して契約してるんだし、別段「米国が悪い」わけではない。ただ強欲なだけで。"
